Fun With Elwyn California

Elwyn-2013-300x200Orange Sunrise Rotary continues its support for Elwyn California, which provides vocational training and job placement for the disabled.  In September, members assisted with the annual Elwyn California picnic, serving hot dogs and calling bingo numbers in the park for several dozen Elwyn clients.

On March 2, 2013, we attempted to regain our title as the champions of the “Rotary Challenge” at the 15th Annual Elwyn Bowl-a-Thon, hosted by the Fountain Bowl.  While we were unable to recapture our bowling mojo, we enjoyed a great day of fun with other Rotarians and Rotaractors, including UCI Rotaract, Anaheim Hills Rotary and the Rotary eClub of the West.

Peace Through Service Speech Contest

2013 Speech ContestEl Modena High School students Shannon Jennings, Alyssa Lentz and Alexandra Seville each presented a five minute speech on the Rotary theme “Peace Through Service” at the annual contest sponsored by Orange Sunrise Rotary on February 27, 2013.

Shannon, a senior, placed first and junior Alyssa took second place.  All three young women received small cash awards for their participation.  Shannon will advance to the Rotary District 5320 area competition, to be held March 23rd at Orange Coast College.

OSR Takes Elwyn Title Again!

2012 Elwyn Bowl-a-ThonFirst place in the Rotary Challenge at the Elwyn California Bowl-a-Thon goes to…Orange Sunrise Rotary. Congrats to Huntington Beach Rotary for making it interesting! Great bowlers and great fellowship. So fun to see Anaheim Hills Rotary, Fountain Valley Rotary, Huntington Beach Interact, and the Rotary Club of Tustin-Santa Ana working to raise $40,000 for Elwyn’s vocational programs for the disabled.

Orange Sunrise Delivers Goodies for the Troops

Orange Sunrise Rotary members collected 3 large file boxes of goodies for our troops in Afghanistan, including one large box of hygiene supplies (desperately needed toothpaste, razors, etc.) a big box of candy, playing cards, books and games, and bonus box of Hot Rod magazines.

The items were part of a drive organized in connection with the Rotary Zone Institute, held in Palm Springs, November 10-12.   Member Rae Shirer delivered the goodies, which were picked up by Camp Pendleton Marines for shipment overseas.

Rotary Clubs Team Up for Elwyn Picnic

Orange Sunrise members joined the Rotary Club of Fountain Valley to help host the annual picnic for clients of Elwyn California.  Elwyn provides vocational training and job placement for the disabled.

The picnic was held under drizzly skies at Lake Park in Huntington Beach.  Fortunately, the clubs brought “EZ-up” tents and warm smiles.

Elwyn’s clients were treated to a hot dog lunch with all the trimmings and played several enthusiastic rounds of Bingo!  Winners received key rings, water bottles and sunglasses.

Orange Sunrise volunteers included Rotary Youth Exchange Student Julia Molto Gomez and her host “sister” Amie Clay.  Both are enrolled as seniors at Orange High School.

Clippin’ Coupons for the Troops

Orange Sunrise began a new, ongoing project collecting manufacturers’ coupons for military families around the world.  Club members collected coupons from the mail, Sunday newspapers, neighbors and friends.  At our September 21st meeting, we had a great time clipping and sorting while also laughing and sharing fellowship.

We encourage other Rotary clubs and organizations to join the coupon club!  Manufacturers’ (“in store” and no restaurant coupons) can be used in commissaries and PX locations for six months after expiration!  For more information, about how this works, visit this link.

Rotary Clubs of Orange Receive Library Legacy Award

The Rotary Clubs of Orange, Orange North and Orange Sunrise were honored with the first Organizational Legacy Award at the Orange Public Library Foundation “Legacy Gala” on Saturday, April 24th.

The gala kicked off the Library Legacy Campaign, to obtain major underwriting gifts and establish endowments for future support of the library collection and programs.

The three Rotary Clubs were recognized for their support and fundraising during the library’s reconstruction and renovation, completed in April of 2007.  The clubs raised nearly $60,000 for dedication of the Rotary Conference Room, selling raffle tickets for a Ford Mustang donated by Villa Ford.  The winning ticket was sold at the 13th Annual Orange Plaza Car Show, sponsored by Orange Sunrise Rotary.
