Orange Sunrise Rotarian Rae Shirer was inducted as the 2013-2014 Governor for Rotary District 5320 during transition ceremonies at the Doubletree Hotel in Orange.
Club members turned out in force to celebrate the first Governor ever selected from Orange Sunrise Rotary. Rae joined Orange Sunrise in 2003 and served as Club President during the 2006-2007 Rotary year.

Orange Sunrise Rotary presented the 2013 El Modena Interact Leadership Award to graduating senior Janine Nguyen on June 9th during baccalaureate ceremonies at the school. Janine, President of the Interact Club, received $1,500 in recognition of her leadership and citizenship. Janine also attended Rotary Youth Leadership Camp in 2012 and returned as an “alumni” in 2013 to help plan and direct camp activities. Janine plans to attend the University of California at Irvine is excited about joining the UCI Rotaract Club next year.
Orange Sunrise Rotary dominated the small club category of the awards presented at the Rotary 5320 District Conference Awards received were: Highest Membership Retention ($300 award), Highest Membership increase ($500), 1st place Vocational Service (Working Wardrobes), 1st place Club Service (Car Show), 1st place Community Service (Blessing Bags), 1st place New Generations (backpacks), and 2nd place Club Website.
Representatives from Orange Police Explorer Post 266 stopped by to receive our thanks for the fantastic job they do in the community, including helping us with the Orange Plaza Car Show. We also met next year’s board of our super-duper El Modena High School Interact Club. And we heard from our RYLA camp attendees about their great experience and the leadership skills they learned.

A crowd of 12,000 visitors enjoyed the area restaurants and classic rock and roll from DJ Thumper. Emcee Rex announced the many raffle prizes to be won and let the crowd know when Sturgeon Brothers Racing was about to fire up the alcohol-fueled dragster.
Nearly 40 vendors, including local hot rod shops, Home Depot, and Selman Chevrolet chatted with visitors and car owners throughout the day.
Proceeds of the Orange Plaza Car Show are used by Orange Sunrise Rotary to fund its charitable projects during the year, including Back to School Backpacks, Blessing Bags for the homeless and sheltered, books for local elementary schools and the annual El Modena Interact Leadership Scholarship.
Members of the El Modena Interact Club, Rotary Innerwheel and dozens of community volunteers assisted with the show.

Orange Sunrise held a surprise baby shower for Tracey and Jason Curtis on April 24, 2013. The event was carefully disguised as a post-car show review meeting.
After cake and gifts, the expectant Mom rushed off to get to the Angels game. The girl is a multi-tasker.
On March 6th, Orange Sunrise Rotary collected “gently used” business and professional clothing to donate to Working Wardrobes of Orange County. Working Wardrobes ”empowers men, women, young adults and veterans overcoming difficult challenges to confidently enter the workforce and achieve self-sufficiency.” WW “provides career training, job placement assistance and wardrobe services in an environment of dignity and respect.”
The project, initiated by Vocational Service Chair Teri Snyder, involved members, family, friends and neighbors, who donated clothing and helped to sort and pack it for delivery to Working Wardrobes.
Orange Sunrise Rotary has joined with the Rotary Club of Athani, India, to provide 160 school desks, 5 computers and accessories to six schools in India, including a school for the blind.
The two clubs submitted an application for a matching grant from The Rotary Foundation, which will match funds contributed by the clubs, Rotary District 5320 and Rotary District 5230. Total project funds of $11,798 will be administered by the Rotary Club of Athani to assure that each school receives these greatly needed desks and computers.
Orange Sunrise Rotary continues its support for Elwyn California, which provides vocational training and job placement for the disabled. In September, members assisted with the annual Elwyn California picnic, serving hot dogs and calling bingo numbers in the park for several dozen Elwyn clients.
On March 2, 2013, we attempted to regain our title as the champions of the “Rotary Challenge” at the 15th Annual Elwyn Bowl-a-Thon, hosted by the Fountain Bowl. While we were unable to recapture our bowling mojo, we enjoyed a great day of fun with other Rotarians and Rotaractors, including UCI Rotaract, Anaheim Hills Rotary and the Rotary eClub of the West.
