Orange Plaza Rotary Announces Mentor Meals Plus – Year 2!

Orange Plaza Rotary is pleased to announce that it will continue the Mentor Meals Plus program at El Modena High School during the 2014-2015 academic year.  Funding for the program is made possible by a District grant from Rotary District 5320.

The recently completed first year of the Mentor Meals Plus Project partnered Orange Plaza Rotary with the Collaborative Technology Program (CTP) at El Modena High School (Orange, CA) to connect students with business and community mentors. Four Rotary meetings (from October, 2013 through April, 2014) were held at the high school where Rotarians dined with, interacted with, and mentored a group of at-risk high school juniors (26).

Each evening had a focus topic (career decisions, service to others, overcoming obstacles, and ethical decision-making) and included a brief guest speaker presentation. Table assignments matched one Rotarian mentor, one El Modena alumni mentor, and six CTP students. Table discussions were encouraged through ice-breakers and talking points.

Additionally, Orange Plaza Rotarians served as judges for senior (25) end-of-year presentations. Orange Plaza also awarded $1,500 to students committed to furthering their education after high school.

The first meal of the new year will be held in October.  Business and community leaders in the City of Orange are encouraged to attend the orientation and mentor training on September 24th at 5:30 p.m. at Ruby’s Streamliner Lounge in Old Towne Orange.

Farewell to Summer Party

It seems that summer is hanging on with a vengeance, but we partied anyway!  Members brought their families to Rae’s home in Costa Mesa for a backyard barbeque, great conversation and a little water fun.

In addition to hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken kebabs, everyone enjoyed the potluck side dishes and desserts, including Theresa’s super sekrit, world-famous baked beans.

Okay summer, we are done now!

Plaza Parking at the Street Fair

Thank you to everyone that came out to support Orange Plaza Rotary at the Orange International Street Fair this weekend. We raised several thousand dollars to End Polio Now and to support our community service projects. A special shout out to our volunteers from the Orange Plaza Car Show and to Past President Amy Bippus. Of course, we always have the best signs, thanks to Sue MacArthur Hansen Hayes of Showcard Signs. See you next year! — with Teri SnyderJoe ColomboChris HaleJack SappingtonJason Curtis,Tracey L. A Proud Post About a Post

We are always happy to welcome members of the Orange Police Explorers Post #266, the oldest police explorer program in the country.  They shared their latest news, including high scores in individual and team competitions, and listed the many, many events they support in the city and county.  The Post is a vital part of community security and safety and sporting events and other community celebrations.

Of course, we value our partnership with the Post for the Annual Orange Plaza Car Show.  Post members greet the crowds and gently enforce the “no dogs, no bikes” rule.  It is an honor to work with them and provide a little financial support for their unit.

Clubs Partner in International Service

Members of five Rotary clubs met with Orange Plaza Rotary on July 30th to celebrate the success of the Edenvale School renovation project, funded by a Rotary District 5320 grant.  The project was spearheaded by Orange Plaza Rotarian Amy Bippus, who pulled together the support of other clubs to contribute time, money and talent.

The $18,000 project renovated school restrooms and provided much needed school supplies for elementary school students in Edenvale, South Africa.  Amy personally traveled to South Africa to deliver supplies and tour the campus.  Her report to the combined clubs was inspirational!

New Year, New Name, New Attitude!

Our first meeting of the new Rotary year kicked off in high gear as we embraced our new moniker “Orange Plaza Rotary”.  Visitors from our parent club, Orange Rotary, were on hand and received a limited-edition “Orange Sunrise Rotary” club banner.  President Tracey presided over a fun meeting reviewing the Rotary International Convention in Sydney and planning for the year ahead.  Onward!
